Less is EVERYTHING!
I was just asked for MY headshots again... Aaaaand I don't really have any. I mean, I have lots of selfies on my phone. But not real ones. Hilarious, I know. But who the hell can I get to do mine? The answer: ME, of course. I mean, seriously... who else is there??
So after I finished my studio sessions yesterday, I sat down to create some for myself. {That laptop isn't one of those bullshit "look at me pretending to work" props that you see in 'personal branding' shots all the time. I'm controlling the camera.}
And what did I learn after an hour tinkering with my own expression? LESS IS EVERYTHING. It's extremely hard to do SO LITTLE. That's why most headshots are so cheesy and hollow. I call them the "grinning idiot" shots. The placeholder silhouette on LinkedIn would be better. At least then there's some freaking mystery!
It’s the antidote to those "grinning idiot" shots that you see all the time… Giant, empty smiles that convey “nice” and 'approachable'... but nothing else.
No depth. No presence. No value. No certainty. No character. No wisdom. No joy. The lights are on, but no one's home.
The thing is... if you have profile shots like that, IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT. We've come to accept this low bar for 1 reason. That's all most photographers are capable of. And so this has become a standard that most of us have had to accept.
But we've been told we need to "stand out"... Be "more visible". And so I guess photographers think that means bigger, brighter... more outrageous.
But instead of "Standing Out" I'm far more interested in being able to convey what you "Stand IN". The complexity and power of human expression shouldn;t be reduced to 😬 Being 'more audacious' to me means sharing something more present and real.
So the next time you find yourself in front of a camera (that's not mine)... DO LESS. The nuance and 'range of meaning' we all have access to will surprise you.
